Dr. James R. Jewitt

My successes as a teacher and mentor are inextricably intertwined with my passion for research and scholarship. In my work, I explore the dynamic role art and visual culture play in global societies from the past through present day. As an art historian, I specialize in the art and architecture of renaissance and early modern Europe (1300-1750), though my teaching areas encompass diverse topics throughout the history of art and visual culture.  As a Collegiate Associate Professor, I have balanced an active research agenda and publication record with significant contributions to the teaching mission of the School of Visual Arts (SOVA), specifically through the Visual Arts & Society Minor (VAS) and Art History Program.

Background

I graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in Art History and a B.A in English from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. I completed a graduate assistantship at the Samek Aart Gallery at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. I earned my Ph.D. in the History of Art & Architecture from the University of Pittsburgh, with an advanced certificate in Medieval & Renaissance Studies.

Since 2014, I have taught in the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. I currently serve as Chair of Art History Program and Chair of the interdisciplinary Visual Arts & Society Minor.
